Ten years of armed conflict in Syria have caused millions of people to leave their homes in search of a safe haven. Fleeing for their lives, refugees are forced to leave all that they have behind. This fund will support relief efforts by organizations working in the area who are providing emergency assistance and ongoing support to those in need.

Challenge

Since 2011, the ongoing conflict involving the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, Syrian opposition forces, and ISIS has resulted in more than 400,000 deaths and caused more than half of the country's 22 million citizens to flee their homes. The UNHCR estimates that more than 5.7 million people, half of whom are children, have fled to neighboring countries, and 6.1 million people are displaced internally within Syria, making it the largest exodus of refugees in more than two decades

Solution

This fund will support life-saving assistance and relief efforts for Syrians displaced by conflict, both within Syria and in neighboring countries. Your support will help survivors and victims get necessary immediate relief supplies like food and hygiene kits, as well as provide long-term support through activities such as building water systems, providing school supplies, job training, and public outreach to increase awareness and understanding of the crisis.

Across Afghanistan, thousands of civilians have been killed and hundreds of thousands have been forced from their homes. With the Taliban now in power, families, communities, and livelihoods are more threatened than ever. This disaster relief fund has supported people impacted by Hurricane Dorian's storm system in the form of emergency supplies like food, water, and medicine. Beginning in 2020, and we will be investing in the rebuilding of homes, communities and livelihoods on Grand Bahama, Abaco, and in ongoing support of evacuees in Nassau. All donations to this fund will exclusively support relief and recovery efforts in areas impacted by this storm.

Challenge

On September 1, 2019 Dorian reached Category 5, with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph while making landfall in Elbow Cay, Bahamas. Dorian made another landfall on Grand Bahama several hours later. The ridge of high pressure steering Dorian westward collapsed on September 2, causing Dorian to stall just north of Grand Bahama for about a day. It is the strongest known tropical system to impact the Bahamas. On September 6th Dorian made landfall at Cape Hatteras, NC devastating Ocracoke Island

Solution

All donations to this fund will support recovery and relief efforts after Hurricane Dorian. Initially, funding was provided to help first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. The fund is now transitioning to support longer-term recovery efforts run primarily by local, vetted organizations in The Bahamas, the United States and the Caribbean. We will support psycho-social care, and physical, economic and emotional rebuilding.

Long-Term Impact

We believe that organizations that are deeply rooted in local communities are in the best position to provide long-term support for survivors of natural disasters like Hurricane Dorian. By funding the relief efforts of local organizations, donations to this fund have the potential to build stronger response capacity so that these organizations are better equipped to face future challenges. GlobalGiving will post reports about how funds have been used and will email these reports to donors.

Educating females is the best way to accelerate equality in society for women and girls. Many female refugees lose out on education when they are displaced, either to a foreign country or internally in Afghanistan. We provide fast track classes in literacy, mobile literacy (learning through texting), tailoring, computing, English and other subjects to thousands of women and girls. Many of our students are former refugees, returned from Iran or Pakistan or internally displaced persons.

Challenge

Lack of education deprives women of opportunity and prevents them from gaining equal standing in society. Refugee women and internally displaced persons (IDPs) miss out on years of learning, making it harder to restart their education. Women need to develop their abilities and be appreciated for what they can contribute. They need literacy, numeracy and to develop critical thinking skills. They also need income- generating skills training to give them the opportunity to start businesses.

Solution

Refugee women and girls and those IDPs get the chance to catch up on years of missed schooling, studying for grade certificates on a fast track basis. They can learn income- generating skills such as tailoring and computing and they can then set up small businesses or get jobs. They gain respect, their capacity is recognized and their ideas are sought in family and community.

Long-Term Impact

Thousands of women and girls who are returned refugees or IDPs will become literate and gain other education. Some will mainstream into government schools at age-appropriate grade levels; some will get work. Women will realize they can be leaders and have a role in community. These displaced women will gain back missed years of education and have more opportunity in life which will enable them to live better lives. They will ensure their daughters are educated so the benefit is generational.
