Russia’s attack on Ukraine will lead to major civilian harm and massive displacement. The conflict has the potential to be the largest military action in Europe since WWII. U.S. intelligence projects up to 50,000 people could be killed or wounded. Further violence will devastate Ukraine’s already weakened infrastructure. The country’s health system, is fragile, and its economy has declined drastically. Food and fuel shortages are likely to be acute, public services rendered nonfunctioning.

War has been steadily waging over the last eight years in Ukraine, leaving more than 850,000 people internally displaced and almost 3 million people in need of humanitarian aid. The current escalation in conflict will have devastating consequences for the civilian population and humanitarian needs are expected to rise. Please give what you can today to help us support those forced to flee their homes in Ukraine and in crisis zones worldwide.

Solution

We are working to quickly mobilize resources and connect with partners and local civil society organizations to provide responsive programming. Our teams are on the ground in neighboring Poland – already home to a large Ukrainian population – assessing the situation and the arising humanitarian needs. Poland has estimated that it could receive up to 1 million refugees. Ukraine also hosts refugees from other countries, such as Afghanistan and Belarus, who are at particular risk.

Long-Term Impact

Many Ukrainians will be displaced internally, and others will be forced to flee. Poland has estimated that it could receive up to 1 million refugees. This would be the worst humanitarian crisis Europe has seen in decades. People and families must be protected. The world must prepare for the worst and get funds to relief services inside and outside Ukraine. This will save lives and alleviate human suffering in Ukraine and around the world.
